Macadamia is a genus of four species of trees in the flowering plant family Proteaceae. They are indigenous to Australia, native to northeastern New South Wales and central and southeastern Queensland specifically. Two species of the genus are commercially important for their fruit, the macadamia nut.

Macadamia nuts are naturally low in sugar and carbohydrates. They also contain various essential nutrients such as dietary fiber and antioxidants that help reduce the risk or manage conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and digestive health. It’s also an excellent source of: Protein.

What Do They Taste Like? The fattiest of the nut family, macadamias have a sweet buttery flavor and crisp exterior with a creamy interior. Roasting deepens the flavor and enhances the crunch just a bit.

The nut was first commercially produced on a wide scale in Hawaii, where Australian seeds were introduced in the 1880s, and for some time they were the world’s largest producer.  South Africa has been the world’s largest producer of the macadamia since the 2010s.

The macadamia nut is the most expensive nut in the world, with the hardest shell to crack. These exotic nuts are full of quality protein and have a rich, buttery flavor—making them ubiquitous in both the snack aisle and on dessert menus.
